چکیده

IN ELECTROLYTE imbalance the failure of the electrocardiogram to correlate with clinical and laboratory findings may result in both diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. Several authors 14 in particular have stressed the lack of conformity of electrocardiographic manifestations with the serum levels of potassium. This disparity has been attributed to the presence of electrocardiographic alterations from other causes or to concomitant abnormalities of other electrolytes. For example, Roberts and Magida5 6 studied the influence of the acid-base balance experimentally and concluded that electrocardiographic changes suggesting hyperkalemia and hypokalemia could be induced respectively by acidosis and alkalosis, and that such alterations were dependent upon the pH rather than the actual serum potassium concentration. Tarail,7 on the other hand, was unable to establish any correlation between serum pH, sodium, or calcium with the intensity of potassium effects reflected in clinical electrocardiograms. Attempts have also been made to clarify the apparent lack of correlation between the electrocardiogram and the actual serum electrolyte

Prevalence of Electrolyte Imbalance in Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy: A Hospital-based Prospective Observational Study

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of electrolyte imbalance in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Moreover, the correlation of this condition with Apgar score is evaluated. Methods: This prospective observational hospital-based study was conducted on 75 neonates affected by asphyxiation. Immediately (within ...

Furosemide Induced Electrocardiographic Alterations in High Producing Holstein Dairy Cows

Diuretics have several therapeutic advantages in dairy cows but there are different side effects such as acid-base and electrolyte imbalances which may affect the electrocardiographic parameters. Fifteen multiparous, clinically healthy, non-pregnant and high producing 4-year-old Holstein dairy cows at their early lactation period were randomly divided into 3 equal experimental groups. Furosemid...

Study on effect of salinity level of water on electrocardiogram and some of blood serum minerals in grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella

In this study the effects of salinity on the electrocardiogram and some of blood serum minerals in grass carp were investigated. For this purpose, grass carp were exposed to concentrations of 4, 8 and 12 g L-1 salinities and electrocardiogram of all fish was recorded. Blood samples were also collected from all fish and serum minerals were measured. Our results indicated that mineral ...

Post-paroxysmal tachycardia syndrome.

Inversion of the T wave of the electrocardiogram may persist for a long time after an episode of paroxysmal tachycardia in the absence of detectable heart disease. Mattingly (1959) has stressed the existence of "spurious heart disease" as a result of erroneous diagnosis. This may lead to unnecessary restriction of physical activity and diet, expensive diagnostic procedures and therapy, and loss...
